michigan handgun law?

i was considering moving to upper michigan and noticed they require you to register your hangun with the city or sherrif.

How strictly is this enforced? If i shoot an intruder and my pistola is unregistered is it automatic jail time?

Contrary to micks comment Upper Michigan is a great place to be. Detroit is in the extreme southeast corner, so he basically doesnt know what hes talking about.(sorry mick) Michigan has a handgun permit system for over 100 years. You take the gun to the sheriffs office, they run a state police lien against you and the guns serial number. then they issue you the permit.long guns are unregulated. the state is also a "Shall issue" state for ccw. Michigan is fair on home defense, but i will warn you, the unregistered handgun is a felony, period.aout the only way around this is occasionally someone will have Uncle Joes old Luger they brought home from Germany in the house. the law has worked well for a long time and Ive never heard anyone bothered by LEO for it.another law here strictly enforced, is "Brandishing" DO NOT EVER THREATEN ANYONE WITH A GUN YOU DO NOT INTEND TO SHOOT they will prosecute heavily on this one. Michigan residents are very much pro gun and pro hunting, but most do support the registration of handguns, unlike some other states, Michigan has for a long time known that AK 47s and the like arent used in crime very often and that pistols are the primary crime gun. but there are no calls for regulation that hold water. basically the laws are fairly simple and easy to follow handguns are registered and long guns arent.private sales of either are not regulated except 18 for long guns, 21 for hand guns. no felons or violent criminals can own unless they are expunged.

Gypsybiker, I've got a house in the north of Oscoda county.

Stupid question, but is there any work around?

You're going to need THREE guns if you're going to Houston. It's been pretty bad ever since New Orleans moved in.

Re: michigan handgun law?

I just went to the county courthouse and got some purchase permits, went to my gun broker and he filled out the permits and kept one of each. I then returned home with the pistols and mailed the cards into the county who then forwards one of each to the ATF. There is no longer a need to let them see or inspect hand guns anymore. If you 'find' a gun or have one that is not registered you would take it to the local sheriff to have them run the serial.

There is quite a bit of work if you have skills, I dont know what you do but unskilled labor right now is having a tough time. Michigans unemployment numbers reflect the manufacturing end of the economy, trades, services and professionals are doing fine.BTW Im about 50 miles of your place
